Before I share with you my arsenal of great net tools that almost certainly assist you to work remotely, I must make you aware of one more item concerning self management and especially to do with keeping your focus and levels of concentration
I’ve spotted and verified a common behavior in individuals who work on the Internet and I’ve been in contact with for some time and I call this behavior the 50 minute effect. I spotted these friends who focus and work for 50 mins. and then always take a whole ten minute rest and are a significant order of magnitude more efficient and produce a significantly better quality of work than people who don’t have similar working methods.

Phone calls
Skype used to infuriate me as the call performance was appalling, but all credit to the engineers at Skype now as they have really improved the quality of the service. For just a few bucks a month they enable me to call and conference in any phone and Skype user in the world. The current version of Skype has an abundance of really good functions and there constantly expanding collection of useful add on applications.
Organising Content
Evernote has acquired in excess of a million users in no time at all – it enables you to store, organise and annotate any type of digital content on the net. Just go check it out…it’s free.
Invoicing, Time and Expenses capture, Accounting and CRM
You definitely know that my dream to work remotely was originally encouraged by Quickbooks Online, a small business accounting software system. But it is easily beaten hands down by the free edition of salesorder.com – a lead to cash system that’s as easy to use as a kettle I looked at NetSuite whose pricing (and people) scared me off. The top reason members of both sexes fail to succeed at working remotely is they don’t see the neccesity of first rate organisation and robust self management.
I have been working remotely for more than six years since I first found Quickbooks online an ‘on demand’ small business accounting software web application and was inspired by the fact that if you can perform accounting on the net then why shouldn’t it be practical to do other important types of work at a distance?
Whilst working remotely has substantial gains there are numerous pitfalls which convert into issues that cause decreased work output and reduced morale. The key reason for low productivity in remote workers is disruption and it is a confirmed and well publicised fact that it can take a professional up to 0.33 hours to establish their original productivity level after experiencing a distraction.
Deeper insights reveal that members of both sexes who are consistently subjected to distractions are more likely to suffer from decreased memory power and are prone to developing mental health trouble in old age. We exist in an over communicated world and it is essential that you are acquainted with the problems this causes before you decide to work remotely. Whilst operating remotely you must do everything possible to eradicate the jeopardy of being disturbed.
Here are things that really do work:
1, Get a consistent schedule, tell everyone about it and stick to it!
Good examples are a consistent time of day when you check or write and send mail and make or will accept phone conversatiions. Before I began working remotely I used to receive well over two hundred e-mails a day. Now I think I am unfortunate if I get more than 4. To ‘restart’ my e-mail experience I altered my e-mail address and vigorously took steps to look after the details being passed on to anyone. I then ‘trained’ everyone who I gave my e-mail address to, to use it wisely and sparingly. I also set up an auto-responder that swiftly told anyone sending me mail at what time of day I would be processing mail and if something needed my urgent attention to mark it as ‘Urgent’.
2. Get rid of alerts.
Turn off absolutely everything that can send you a perceptible alert. This includes mobile and
ordinary handsets and forms of alerts from electronic mail such as visual alerts, warning sounds, display changes to your inbox folder and of course facing a window. Get a door on your work place and put up a ‘do not disturb’ sign on it.

Obviously not everybody is allowed to work remotely as some vocations require us to be at their employers premises or travel to undertake their duties in person. But for those of us who are allowed to work remotely then I thought it would be useful to share my experiences and share some practical directions by writing and publishing it on the net with the sole objective of providing useful advice for adapting to remote working or supervising remote workers.
I should warn you that there are a lot of people on the web who will try and sell you courses for significant sums of money, take my word for it you don’t need to do this.
I am fortunate to be able to work anywhere I choose and just about everyone who asks me what job I do wants to understand how I manage to work remotely. Don’t be mislead here I am still improving the art of remote working as everyday I find folks on the net who show me new approaches and I am continually coming across new tools and ways that make my life simpler and make me more efficient.
Over the past 7 years I have significantly adapted my working processes to let me to do the majority of my work remotely with a selection of internet tools and solid self discipline. One early morning whilst searching the Internet I unearthed Quickbooks online and this got me thinking about what just might be possible. My discovery of ’hosted’ ‘on demand’ small business accounting software was a significant event for me and the beginning of my ‘remote working history.
I have got to tell you up front that productively working remotely is as much about the tools as it is about self discipline. Working remotely also means informing your team members, supervisors and clients as to what they can expect and how they will stay in touch with you.
